Somos Aire

In this borderlands steampunk fairytale, a young woman returns to her hometown of San Ysidro in search of a cure that will save her sister and her community. Exploring issues of environmental justice and air quality, “Somos Aire” is a play about history, homecoming, and hope.

Are you interested in reading/performing "Somos Aire?" The script is available to read here and is available to use for educational and community performances. Please contact me for details.

To ensure that the "Somos Aire" story would live on past its theatrical life, we decided to turn this story into a comic book

This project is made possible by a Far South/Border North grant.

Mabelle Reynoso (playwright/producer) and Johnny Bear Contreras (set and props designer) are two of about 60 individual artists and cultural practitioners working to create campaigns that raise awareness of crucial issues affecting San Diego and Imperial counties communities as part of the Far South/Border North. This activity is funded in part by the CalArts Council, a state agency, and with additional support from the Prebys Foundation.

Performance History

"Somos Aire" premiered on June 8, 2024 at El Salon theatre in San Ysidro, CA. Since then, the show has enjoyed audiences consisting of community members, elected officials, theatre patrons throughout San Diego county, and the young people of San Ysidro. View the show program here.
