We decided to turn the play “Somos Aire” into a comic book because we felt the issue at the heart of this story--air quality and environmental justice in San Ysidro and similar communities--needs to be shared in as many forms as possible.

The border town of San Ysidro is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere. Over 60,000 vehicles travel through the San Ysidro border daily, resulting in devastating health consequences for the community. Although air is invisible, the “Somos Aire” story invites us to pay attention and find a connection to that which we cannot see.

To ensure that the "Somos Aire" story would live on past its theatrical life, we decided to turn this story into a comic book which has been shared with the San Ysidro community and beyond. I wrote it and my sister Zulema (who was the costume and set designer for the play) did the art. We even shared it at Comic-Con. You can read about our panel here (thanks Comics Beat!).
